Teaching Journal

Pre-Semester
So, I'm really excited about teaching. I mean, I've taught before, for about two years as part of a teaching fellowship during grad school, but I had a year and a half hiatus in between. So, the anticipation--and a certain level of anxiety--has risen within me. I've been so busy revising the syllabus, planning the weekly lectures, and drafting handouts that I barely have time to work on my outside projects (eg. the novel). Academia has called me, and I will return with open arms. In addition to the curriculum, I've been preparing the outfits that I'm going to wear for the first month, because the first impression's the most important one. I know that students will appreciate a knowledgeable and approachable instructor, but we are all a bit superficial. In short, looks count, and it doesn't hurt to look well put together and stylish.

Week #1 (Days Before the Start of the Semester)
So, we had our first official meeting of the semester. We discussed protocol when it comes to plagiarism, fraternizing with students, and planning our syllabi. My syllabi's complete, but I was a bit remiss about having to water down the original language for students who may not comprehend the language. We don't want them to hurt their wrists by making them pick up an actual dictionary. And god forbid they feel the need to ask their instructors what this word or that word means. Beyond that, I really like this school. I feel the freedom to lead the class in the direction I intended--a more critically aware way of reading and communicating about texts.
